Arriving into Phoenix at 2AM, and getting less than an hour of sleep (thanks to the battling chainsaws that are my brothers) caused Friday to be a little rough. But Vegas was only six hours away, so we powered thru to arrived in time to catch New Years on the strip.
First stop was Hoover Dam though since we couldn’t check into the hotel until after 2pm. One of the most interesting tid-bits I picked up from the tour was that the Dam is an Arch-gravity dam. This means that the dam is actually supported and in fact reinforced by the weight of the water pushing behind the arch shape. All this time I had thought they had drilled it into the side walls of the canyon, when in fact the water pushes it into the side walls sealing it and giving it strength. That and the fact that the Dam was completely 2 years ahead of schedule, makes it an amazing feat of engineering.
Though we enjoyed the day at the dam, we had an even better time that night bringing in the New Year on the strip. Unfortunately, for posting, I played it safe and followed my no alcohol/no camera policy and left the camera back at the hotel, which turned out in the end to be a good idea as the sheer number of people would have made for many unsafe situations for me to possibly lose my baby. However, after getting back to the hotel that night I did take a cab out to the Welcome sign to at least snag one picture from our evening.
